21 September 2004, Celtic thumped Falkirk 8-1 in the Scottish League Cup. Ross Wallace took the match ball home after netting his hat-trick. 21/09/96 Celtic 5 Dunfermline 0 – Pierre van Hooijdonk, (back) Paolo Di Canio (7) celebrate with Jorge Cadete
28 years ago today, Celtic defeated Dunfermline 5-1 at Celtic Park. This game was more famous for matters occurring off the pitch. A bonus dispute was raging on between the players and the club which culminated in Tommy Burns apologising to supporters. Unhappy with the players, Fergus urged them not to get distracted with the task on hand. The scorers that day were Cadete with Di Canio and Van Hooijdonk grabbing a brace.
21 September 1968, Celtic were held to a 1-1 draw at East End Park with Dunfermline. Celtic suffered a 2-0 loss in France against St Etienne three days before this important league fixture and confidence appeared to be fading. Jimmy Johnstone levelled the game with 25 to play but Celtic could not find a winner. The Hoops went onto defeat St Etienne 4-0 in the second leg to reach the 2nd round of the European Cup.
Moussa Dembele scored
On This Day eight years ago, Celtic were victorious against Scottish Championship side Alloa Athletic to seal a place in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals. James Forrest managed to break the deadlock with seven minutes to play, which was closely followed by a Moussa Demeble strike to ease the nerves. The game is most famous for Craig Gordon’s kung-fu kick on Alloa forward Greig Spence. If there was VAR back in 2016, the current Hearts goalkeeper would almost certainly have been ordered off.
21 September 1957, Celtic won their first game at Ibrox in the league in 22 years with a 3-2 victory. The Glasgow Herald read, “the air above Ibrox was damp and clammy, but the terracing atmosphere was tinder-dry 20 minutes before the start when a full half-dozen Eire tricolours were brandished at the Celtic end of the ground.” Collins, McPhail and Wilson were on target for the Hoops in front of an 80,000 crowd in the Southside.
30 years ago today, Celtic beat Dundee United 1-0 to reach the Coca-Cola League Cup semi-final. A fine finish from John Collins with five to play curled the ball past the helpless Alan Main in the Tangerine goal.
