Sandy McMahon’s fine form continues as he scores two against Dundee at West Craigie Park, the original home of Dundee, before an 8,000 crowd which contains many Celtic fans from Dundee and the surrounding area. Joe Cassidy scores as well and the other goal in the 4-1 victory is an own goal.
Champions Celtic begin their defence of the League title at the unlikely venue of Recreation Park, Alloa, home of the newly promoted Alloa. Willie Maley, Chairman of the Scottish League, does the honours of unfurling the Second Division Championship flag. It is a good game too with the 15,000 crowd well packed into the small ground, but Celtic emerge victorious with 3-2 win with goals from Willie McStay, Joe Cassidy and Patsy Gallacher.
A disappointing night for Celtic as they exit the Glasgow Cup 0-2 to Rangers before 55,000 at Ibrox. Sammy Baird scored twice for Rangers, but Celtic were the better side with the half back line of Fernie, Evans and Peacock playing superbly. The fault lay up front where many chances were squandered.
By no means Celtic’s best performance of the season so far, but still a comfortable victory over Clyde at Shawfield, a ground where Celtic rarely play their best football. Tonight, Tommy Gemmell scored two penalties in the 2-0 victory.
Forfar Athletic are rare visitors to Celtic Park, but tonight they are here on League Cup business. They put up a good show before being overwhelmed in the second half as Celtic’s good start to the season continues with a 3-1 victory. Two goals are scored by new signing Andy Walker and one by another newcomer Billy Stark to the delight of the 15,000 crowd.
