SATURDAY 18 AUGUST 1906

The season opens at Fir Park, Motherwell and Celtic lay down a clear indication of intent with a 6-0 beating of the home side. Jimmy Quinn shows he means business with a hat-trick and Willie Loney, Jimmy Hay and Peter Somers score the other goals which delight the many Celtic fans in the 10,000 crowd, some of whom seem to have walked all the way from Glasgow. Another method of transport is dog carts.

WEDNESDAY 18 AUGUST 1937

Having drawn disappointingly at Queen of the South on Saturday, Celtic won their first game this season with a 2-1 win at Douglas Park, Hamilton, the goals coming from Jimmy McGrory and Frank Murphy.

SATURDAY 18 AUGUST 1956

Celtic have now played three games this season in the League Cup and they have won them all 2-1! Today Willie Fernie and Billy McPhail scored the two goals which beat East Fife at Celtic Park, not as easy a task as it seems to modern eyes. East Fife in fact scored first in the opening minute through Jimmy Bonthrone. East Fife have already won the trophy three times, while Celtic have yet to have their name inscribed on the trophy.

WEDNESDAY 18 AUGUST 1965

A big surprise at Celtic Park tonight when the “forgotten man” John Divers suddenly emerges and scores the only goal of the game as Celtic beat Motherwell 1-0 in a tight League Cup game. Previously, there had been every indication that there was going to be no future for John at Celtic Park under Jock Stein.

THURSDAY 18 AUGUST 2011

A woefully disappointing night against Sion of Switzerland in the Europa League first leg qualifier at Celtic Park. The 0-0 draw says it all. The frustrations of the huge crowd are obvious.
