Neil Lennon has departed as Celtic manager with immediate effect, the club have confirmed.
His exit comes as no surprise since his side were eliminated from both European competitions in embarrassing fashion, exited the League Cup in the first round and sit a staggering 18-points off the top.
Following Sunday night’s a 1-0 loss to then bottom-of-the-table Ross County, the club announced on Wednesday morning that Lennon had resigned from his position.
“We have experienced a difficult season due to so many factors and, of course, it is very frustrating and disappointing that we have not been able to hit the same heights as we did previously,” said Lennon.
“I have worked as hard as ever to try and turn things around but unfortunately we have not managed to get the kind of run going that we have needed.
“I have always given my best to the club and have been proud to deliver silverware to the Celtic supporters. The club will always be part of me. I will always be a Celtic supporter myself and I will always want the best for Celtic.
“I would like to thank so many people at the Club who have given me so much and I would also like to thank my family for their love and support. I wish the Celtic supporters, players, staff and directors nothing but success for the future.”
His assistant and former Hoops defender John Kennedy has been placed in charge until the end of the campaign and takes charge against Aberdeen on Saturday.
In 40 games in all competitions this season, Celtic won just 23.
The decision means incoming chief executive Dominic McKay has a busy first summer in the job ahead, interviewing for both a sporting director and a new permanent first team manager.
