Celtic were expected to sign a striker in the winter transfer window, especially after Kyogo Furuhashi completed a mid-season move to Rennes. But they did not bring anyone in, instead sticking to the options already available to them. Of course, Daizen Maeda's brilliant form in front of goal has helped Brendan Rodgers' fill that void.
One would hope though that a striker is signed in the summer. On the other hand, at least another one is expected to leave the club, with Daniel Cummings' contract running and talks believed to be taking place with West Ham United.
Cummings was in brilliant goalscoring form at the youth and developmental levels for Celtic but did not get enough chances in the senior team to convince him to stay. Now, it looks like the Hoops have set their sights on a possible replacement for him.
As reported by Football Insider, Owen Stirton is a player that Celtic are looking at ahead of the summer transfer window. He is being seen as someone with “huge potential” moving forward which has piqued the Hoops' interest.
Stirton is a Dundee United. But he is currently on loan at Montrose, where he has been scoring goals at a consistent rate, which has caught the eye of many.
Of course, one has to question whether Celtic even need someone like Stirton. They already have Johnny Kenny, who recently returned after a superb loan stint with Shamrock Rovers. But he has been stuck making occasional cameo appearances off the bench.
One cannot overlook Celtic's terrible record when it comes to developing youngsters and integrating them into the senior team setup. The last to make the jump from the academy setup and become a regular starter was Kieran Tierney. As a result, one would imagine that many players would be cautious before making a move to Parkhead.
