Celtic hero Kyogo tipped to 'pack up and leave' Rennes already

A desire to play at the next World Cup for Japan is believed to have been the motivating factor behind Kyogo Furuhashi leaving Celtic to join Rennes. It would be safe to say that he has not had the start to life in France that he would have been hoping for. And now, an exit could very well be on the cards, merely a month after making the move to Ligue 1.

Kyogo was a regular starter at Celtic for three-and-a-half years and scored 85 goals for the Scottish champions, winning eight trophies in the process. Those goals came in big moments as well, in Glasgow derbies, cup finals and Champions League matches.

But since joining Rennes, Kyogo has only made one start and two appearances in total. In the previous four games, he has been left as an unused substitute three times and the French club won all three times.

As a result, questions are being raised about Kyogo's future at Rennes already. Justin Favre wrote in Jeunesfooteux:

"What about Kyogo Furuhashi?Arriving this winter for 12 million euros from Celtic Glasgow, the 30-year-old Japanese striker has only played 83 minutes in Ligue 1 so far. Worse, he has been on the bench three times in the last four matches. A casting error? Not a choice by Habib Beye who prefers to rely on Arnaud Kalimuendo at centre forward, Furuhashi will have to be patient. In our opinion, it would not be surprising to see him pack up and leave during the next transfer window."

Of course, it would not be the first time that a Celtic hero join Rennes, only to leave in the very next transfer window. Just ask Jota about it.

Could a return to Celtic be on the cards for Kyogo, if he does indeed leave Rennes in the summer? It is hard to say.

Firstly, he is 30 years of age and the club do not generally go out and spend a transfer fee for that profile. That being said, if Daizen Maeda leaves in the summer and Kyogo is available for a reasonable figure, perhaps bringing him back would be a sensible idea.

Kyogo is a proven player at Celtic and already accustomed to Brendan Rodgers' system. The failure at Rennes might give him a point to prove as well.
