Celtic hero Peter Grant says Brendan Rodgers wasn't interested in signing Aston Villa captain John McGinn.

The Scotland international was the man who got away from Celtic before he sealed his move to Villa in 2018.

The Hoops chased his signature during the midfielder's time at Hibs before the East Midlands club swooped in with an 11th hour bid to steal him from under their noses.

Celtic legend, Grant, insists Rodgers wasn't overly fussed about doing business for McGinn as he reckons he wouldn't have been his first choice at that moment in time.

He has hailed the Scotland international for making the move though as John Collins agreed as well.

Speaking on Sportsound, he said: "I just thought (he wasn't needed) because of the position he played and what Brendan liked at that particular point in time.

"I think it's benefited John going down to play in England, I genuinely do believe that.

"Coming to Celtic, obviously his grandfather was the chairman and whatever, you have all these different things - being a Celtic supporter.

"I think that's made him grow as a young man having that opportunity to go away.

"But I genuinely felt at that particularl time, I didn't think Brendan was really convinced that John could improve his midfield.

Collins then replied: "Yeah, you're probably right. It would be interesting if any of the journalists ever asked Brendan about John McGinn. It'd be nice to hear what he thought of him. "
