The captain of the club has ensured standards have been maintained for several years now and also reiterated the need for a review of what this club is all about and why defeat at Ibrox a couple of weeks ago is unacceptable.

Since that 3-0 humbling at the hands of Philippe Clement and his team, Celtic have responded in typical, unequivocal fashion; swatting aside St Mirren, Dundee United and Ross County, scoring nine goals and conceding just once – which was from the penalty spot in Dingwall. The consistency and mentality of this squad is something that has been praised to the hilt by their manager and now the skipper has reiterated that those lofty standards must be maintained moving forward.

Relentless right to the end

“We got the goal to go ahead and then probably the last five minutes perfectly encapsulates what we are,” Callum McGregor said via Scottish Sun. “We are relentless right to the end and we scored goals in the last couple of minutes. So it’s really pleasing again. It’s another one we’ve just got to tick off.

The man who is the lynchpin of the team acknowledged the conditions which engulfed them in the Highlands and for a lesser bunch, could have affected the outcome. However, his teammates never lost that belief and had a late flourish.

He said: “It was challenging conditions, but we were really good value for the win. When it went 1-1 we probably didn’t deserve the goal against us, but that can happen. The reaction was superb. The boys flipped the tempo. We flipped the switch a wee bit and started to speed up the game again.”

The reaction has been superb

The perennial winner sets the tone for the team and has revealed surprisingly that perhaps the defeat against our arch-rivals was a timely and effective wake-up call halfway through the season for both himself and his comrades. He continued: “The reaction has been superb — three games, a lot of goals and the team is playing well. There’s been nice consistency and fluidity in the team again.

‘We had to dust ourselves down’

“We spoke about it and obviously it was a sore one for us, but we had to dust ourselves down. We had a game really quickly after that. The boys have spoken about the demands we want to put on each other and the last three games have been excellent, so it’s been a really good response from everyone.

“Now we have to keep doing that every time we play, every time we train. The boys have been fantastic. We’re being driven by a lot of good players, so we know what the level is. We dropped below that for the Rangers game, so it’s up to us to show that reaction and keep winning football matches.”

Calmac added: “Probably theRangers game was a good one, just to refocus the group and realise that when you lose a game it hurts you. It doesn’t matter how far ahead you are or how well you’ve done previously, when you lose a game of football, it hurts.

“And that’s what’s good about this group. They understand that and they know what the expectation level is here. We want to win every single game, try and give the maximum level that we can and then just see where we get to at the end of the season.”
