Our Celtic FC Women players are now just a day away from the biggest game of their Celtic careers. The Hoops face Glasgow City tomorrow afternoon in Scotland’s showpiece Scottish Cup Final – and it’s a game that should hold no fear for this Celtic side.

‘A trophy carries dust. Memories last forever’ was the inspiring quote from Mary Lou Retton when the medal winning gymnast asked what drove her to win medal after medal in her chosen sport.

With the League Cup already gathering dust in the Parkhead trophy room, the memories of that day for Fran Alonso and his Celtic players will remain vivid. And it’s that win over tomorrow’s opponents and the incredible shared memories with each other and the supporters that can be used as an inspiration to go out at Tynecastle, complete the fairytale and create history.

Celtic have never won the Scottish Cup, indeed the League Cup win over City in December was Celtic’s first trophy win in a decade. Now in one season, Celtic under Fran Alonso, could win a domestic cup double and add a new page to Celtic’s incredible history.

And don’t think for a moment Celtic are the underdogs here.

Glasgow City are a fine side, they were 14-in-a-row League Champions, and although losing their cherished title this season you can be assured the Scottish Cup is something they will be entirely focused on achieving. After all, the thought of ending a season without silverware is not a concept worth considering for a team who ruled the Scottish Women’s game for so long.

But the times, they are a changing.

Clarissa Larisey was The Celtic Star’s Player of the Match in the League Cup Final win over Glasgow City.

In just two seasons now Celtic have won silverware, qualified for the Champions League and assembled a team who without argument play the most attractive style of football in Scotland – To play football The Glasgow Celtic – way you might even say.

On any given day Celtic are the match and more for the other top teams in Scotland. Just look at the cup runs this season.

In both the League Cup and in the Scottish Cup, Celtic defeated theRangers to reach the respective finals, a side full of international quality and a team assembled at considerably more expense than Alonso’s modest budget, and one who went through the entirety of the SWPL1 season undefeated.

Glasgow City finished second in that league and did their best to hunt theRangers down, but Celtic defeated them in December’s League Cup Final as Fran Alonso’s tactical approach – and one followed to the letter by his players – outthought and outfought their more experienced and habitual trophy winning opponents. There is absolutely no reason why Celtic can’t do that again.

Charlie Wellings with an early shot on goal during the Scottish Womens Premier League Cup Final match between Glasgow City FC & Celtic FC at Firhill Stadium, on 5 December 2021.

Celtic have match winners throughout their team. Charlie Wellings will hit the 40-goal mark for the season if she scores tomorrow after an incredible debut season in the Hoops, and if there is a better creative force in the Scottish top flight than New Zealand international Liv Chance I’ve yet to see her play. Chance can go box to box, she can thread a pass through the eye of a needle and she’s got a goal or two in her too.

How incidentally can you score 39 goals and NOT win Player of the Year, that’s a complete mystery to those of us who have watched the women’s team this season.

However Jacynta is the player of the year, talented, a ball carrier few teams can cope with, and the drop of the shoulder she possesses can leave the wiliest of defenders tied up in knots. And the speedy Clarissa Larisey absolutely roasted the Glasgow City left back in the League Cup Final, something Alonso is unlikely to have forgotten.

Meanwhile at the back Celtic have a defender who is as solid as teak in Caitlin Hayes, a player who defends crosses as well as she attacks them in the opposition box, the League Cup Final winning goal one example of many where Hayes has proven as much a goalscoring threat as she is a top defensive performer.

Meanwhile Captain Kelly Clark – who yesterday signed a contract extension at the club – and Chloe Craig provide experience, organisation and drive. They are supporters of the club wearing the shirt and they set the standard of what is required to play for Celtic – 100% commitment to the cause.  Caitlin Hayes this morning also signed a contract extension at Celtic, ahead of the Scottish Cup Final.

And pulling all the constituent parts together is a coach in Fran Alonso, who despite operating on a far lesser budget than his main rivals has still shown that in one-off games, winner takes all encounters, he is the tactical match for anyone in Scotland.

All of this should give Celtic belief heading into tomorrow’s Scottish Cup Final, the belief that on any given day they are not just the equal of the opposition, they can be better than them.

The memories gathered from that League Cup Final win, alongside the scalps this side have taken to win that trophy and be on the cusp of a historic cup double, should be all the inspiration Celtic require. And all they need to do to look for an edge over their opponent is to look alongside them and see a teammate who has been there and done it beside them before.

These players shared incredible memories together when they lifted the League Cup in December and whilst the medals and the trophy gather dust now, those memories made together can push Celtic to write a fresh page in Celtic’s history against Glasgow City tomorrow afternoon, and with a huge Celtic support behind them they will have all the backing they need to go out and do just that.
