The story of Celtic’s glory in our favourite competition The Scottish Cup began at Ibrox of all places, on 9 April 1892 and over the past few days we’ve looked at all of Celtic’s triumphs in Scottish Cup Finals up to the 1975 final.
Today we’ll continue by rounding off the 1970s with a look back at the 1977 Scottish Cup final before starting on those four eventful finals Celtic won in the 1980s. But first the Andy Lynch final takes centre-stage.
CELTIC’S SCOTTISH CUP FINALS – Number 25…CELTIC 1-0 RANGERS – HAMPDEN, 7th MAY 1977 – This was the first Scottish Cup final to be televised live for 20 years, and given that, and the dreadful weather, it was no surprise that only 54,252 turned up at the antiquated and now dilapidated Hampden to see what turned out to be a dreadful game.
Celtic were already League Champions and they were marginally the better side in a final which did little for the game’s image in Scotland. The game hinged on a penalty kick awarded half way through the first half which hit either Derek Johnstone’s knee or hand, and pictures are still inconclusive. But Mr Valentine said it was a penalty, and Andy Lynch sank it.
Celtic then held out through a painful second half, and won the Scottish Cup for the 25th time.

Celtic win the Scottish Cup to seal a league and cup double. This was Jock Stein’s 25th trophy as Celtic manager and would be his last. Ronnie Glavin was still recovering from a thigh injury and failed to make the game. Edvaldsson was preferred to Tommy Burns and Johnny Doyle left on the bench with Paul Wilson starting.
First Scottish Cup final televised live in modern times, the last one was 1955 Celtic v Clyde. Over 70,000 tickets sold but rain and TV coverage keeps crowd down to 54,000. Desmond White blames the low attendance on live TV. Police state that they had made 138 arrests inside and outside of stadium.

Paul Wilson started the game in the number 14 shorts and had to replace them at half time with the number 10 shorts. Kenny Dalglish was designated penalty taker but declined to take the kick when the chance came and Andy Lynch stepped forward to win the Scottish Cup for Celtic for the 25th time.
