Plenty of Championship sides had been keen to add Aaron Mooy to their ranks this summer but the midfielder has decided to snub interest from England to seal a deal with Celtic, as reported by their official website.

The midfielder has been a free agent this summer and considering his previous experience in the country, there had been plenty of interest in bringing the player to the second tier of English football.

Journalist Anthony Joseph had reported that Middlesbrough, Swansea and Norwich have all been eyeing up moves for Mooy and could try and secure deals for the 31-year-old. However, rather than deciding to get involved in a potential promotion battle, he has instead chosen European football and the Scottish Premier League with Celtic.

Real Fake

The midfielder has played in the Championship twice before with Huddersfield, having impressed and been arguably one of the best in his position in the division. He helped the Terriers to a play-off spot back in 2016/17 which ultimately led to them – and him – playing in the Premier League.

When Huddersfield were relegated again, he managed one more outing for the side before swapping the club for Brighton and the top flight again. He then departed the club and headed to Shanghai SIPG in China and after two seasons and a total of 17 games for the club, they decided to let go of the 31-year-old and allow him to find a new club.

Rather than see him return to the Championship for a third time though, the player will now be heading to Scotland.

The Verdict

Aaron Mooy might be 31-years-old now and it might have been a while since he was last in the Championship but any club that snapped him up could have been getting a really good midfield option in him.

The player was one of the best in the entire division when he last played for Huddersfield and he adapted to the Premier League well when the Terriers were promoted too. After years of more experience, a return to the second tier would likely have led to even better performances.

However, he has now decided to try his luck in European football with Celtic and you can’t really blame him. The chance to get involved in a competition like the Champions League or even the Europa League doesn’t come around too often and he might thrive given the chance.

Still, he is a big player that could have helped any number of Championship teams to battle for promotion of their own – and they’ll all have to look elsewhere now this deal has been confirmed by Celtic.
