Celtic could pull off ‘a massive coup’ by signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent basis, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 24-year-old joined the Hoops on a season-long loan last summer in a deal that included a £10 million option-to-buy clause and has impressed throughout 2021/22.

Former Celtic striker turned pundit Chris Sutton recently questioned the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award shortlist after claiming the ‘best player in Scotland’ missed out.

Sutton was referring to Carter-Vickers in his tweet and previously labelled the USA international ‘immense’ following his convincing display in an Old Firm derby victory last month.

And the commanding centre-back has been a mainstay in the heart of Ange Postecoglou’s defence since his arrival, registering four goals and one assist in 43 appearances for Celtic.

Carter-Vickers has helped guide the Glasgow giants to a League Cup success and to within touching distance of their 10th Scottish Premiership crown in 11 years.

Yet it remains to be seen if the 6 foot ace will be turning out for Celtic next term, with the club’s hierarchy yet to activate their option-to-buy clause.

What has Jones said about Carter-Vickers?

Several Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for Carter-Vickers in recent weeks, but Jones believes a ‘big enough incentive’ could convince him to remain in Scotland.

He told GiveMeSport: “It’d be a massive coup because the player obviously still believes he can play in the English Premier League.

“But he has found a good home for himself right now, and part of him will realise that and know that if they could put forward a big enough incentive for him to stay, then he maybe should do that.

“It’s a big season next season in Glasgow, there’s so much to compete for between Celtic and Rangers. It’d be a big result if Celtic could keep him; they’ve still got a chance.”

Who else could sign Carter-Vickers?

According to The Scotsman, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and Leicester City are all keen to snap up Carter-Vickers from under Celtic’s nose.

The Premier League trio are said to be ‘weighing up whether to make offers’ for the central defender, with the market set to reopen for business imminently.

Only time will tell where Carter-Vickers is plying his trade next term, but everyone associated with Celtic will surely be hoping they can get this transfer over the line.
