Celtic are considering a move for James McCarthy. The 30-year-old is a free agent having left Crystal Palace this summer and could add an added dimension to Celtic’s midfield. According to Sun journalist Alan Nixon, Celtic are reportedly looking at signing the former Everton midfielder as Ange Postecoglou seeks quality reinforcements in his squad.

Yesterday, The Celtic Star discussed why a move for the midfielder was a shrewd move by Postecoglou. Hopefully a deal is done in the next few days and Celtic can target a goalkeeper, a winger, a right-back and another central defender.

Celtic’s right-back target Aurelio Buta also made an appearance today, suggesting that a deal was not as close as some had suggested during the week. The Portuguese full-back has been linked with a €3.5m move to Paradise but he started in Antwerp’s second league game of the season at home to Kortrijk.

The defeat to Hearts highlights Celtic’s frailties across the squad. The manager needs to get some more signings in the door as soon as possible. Postecoglou has added Liel Abada (RW), Osaze Urhoghide (CB) and Kyogo Furuhashi (ST) with Starfelt (CB) also agreeing to join Celtic. Liam Shaw (CDM) arrived on a pre-contract but it appears as he is a player for the future as opposed to a ready-made first-team player. Another CB, a RB, a goalkeeper and a winger are desirable before the window closes as the club need to get the standard of the first team up to that required of title favourites. McCarthy and Buta certainly would be improvements on what we currently have and the manager needs to be supported in the window by having the board stump up the cash to knock Rangers off their newly-found perch.
