Ange Postecoglu’s side took the lead after 18 minutes, when Aaron Mooy’s free-kick from the right wing deflected in off team-mate Daizen Maeda.

The Bhoys then had the ball in the net for a second time early in the second half but Reo Hatate’s goal was disallowed for offside.

Maeda then thought he’d scored his second of the game to make it 2-0, only for his fine finish to also be ruled out, this time for offside against Kyogo Furuhashi.

The second goal did finally come deep into stoppage time, with substitute Giorgos Giakoumakis putting the game to bed by finishing a rebound off the goalkeeper.

The League Cup holders will now meet the winner of the other semi-final between Rangers and Aberdeen, which takes place on Sunday, in February’s final.
