Celta Vigo have dismissed manager Rafa Benitez, with the club currently hovering dangerously above the relegation zone.

His return to La Liga has come to a premature end after winning only five of his 28 league matches in charge of the club.

Benitez and his coaching staff have been axed after just eight months in charge.

The decision comes with Celta in 17th position in La Liga, just two points above the relegation zone.

Celta’s statement acknowledged the disappointing results during Benitez’s tenure. They finished 13th and 11th in the previous two seasons, so this campaign has been an anticlimax.

Despite the struggles, Celta expressed gratitude towards the experienced Benitez, praising his honesty and professionalism throughout his short spell in charge.

Benitez’s reign wasn’t without its close calls. The weeks leading up to his dismissal saw Celta navigate a tricky trio of fixtures.

They salvaged a point against fellow relegation battlers Cadiz after conceding a late equaliser before narrowly edging out bottom-of-the-table Almeria after a red card dismissal for the visitors.

However, the resounding 4-0 defeat against league leaders Real Madrid this weekend proved to be the final straw.

The search for a new manager begins for Celta as they fight to avoid relegation back to the second division.

They have a crucial run of fixtures ahead, and the club must act swiftly to find a replacement capable of steering them clear of danger.

Celta have been linked with Las Palmas boss Francisco Javier Garcia Pimienta, who is reportedly refusing to sign a new deal.

Pimienta’s side has been praised for their tactical organisation and attractive football, but it is unclear if he’ll leave the club in the middle of the season for Celta.

Celta Fortuna coach Claudio Giraldez will take the reins of the first team from Wednesday.
