Diego Forlán has officially announced his retirement from football at the age of 40.
The former Manchester United, Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan and Uruguay striker was last seen playing for Hong Kong side Kitchee, with his final appearance coming in May last year.
“It hasn’t been easy, I didn’t want the time to come, but I knew it was going to come,” he told Telemundo on Tuesday.
“I have decided to stop playing football professionally.”
In his prime, Forlán was an absolute monster in front of goal and though his big money move to Old Trafford in 2002 didn’t quite go to plan, he did score some stunners for the Red Devils.
Such as this one in the Champions League …
His time in LaLiga – where he played for both Atlético and Villarreal – also yielded some stunners …
One of the highlights of Forlán’s career was the Golden Ball he was awarded for his goals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa …
And the veteran was still doing bits during his short spell with Indian Super League side Mumbai City back in 2016.
“Historic for Uruguayan football,” wrote Forlán’s former international colleague Luis Suárez on Twitter.
“Grateful for all the unforgettable moments you made all Uruguayans live, both in the national team and in all the teams you played.
“I will always be grateful for what you taught me, both on and off the field, a dream to have played with one of my idols. You will always be a legend in Uruguay. A lot of success in your new challenges, friend.”
Happy retirement Diego.
