Just three days after being eliminated from the Champions League by Arsenal, Real Madrid are back in action in La Liga as they take on Athletic Bilbao on matchday 32 of the competition on Sunday, April 20th. The Whites will be bidding to add three more points on the board in the title race, especially after Barcelona beat Celta Vigo in their fixture on Saturday.
Andriy Lunin is expected to be back in the squad for the defending champions although Kylian Mbappe will miss the game due to a suspension. Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao and Ferland Mendy are all injured and will not make the roster either. With that said, here is a look at the potential starting eleven for the team for Sunday’s home meeting against their Basque opponents.
Goalkeeper – Thibaut Courtois
Courtois will keep his place in goal on Sunday with Lunin recently recovering from his injury.
Right Back – Federico Valverde
Valverde could be employed at right back ahead of Lucas Vazquez given Nico Williams’ threat down that side.
Centre Back – Raul Asencio
Asencio is likely to retain his place in the heart of the backline having become a mainstay in the starting eleven of late.
Centre Back – Antonio Rudiger
Rudiger might continue to partner with Asencio with David Alaba’s form proving unimpressive whereas Militao is still injured.
Left Back – Fran Garcia
After coming off the bench in the midweek Champions League game, Fran Garcia might be deployed at left back on Sunday.
Defensive Midfielder – Aurelien Tchouameni
Tchouameni could play in his preferred role at defensive midfield with his compatriot, Eduardo Camavinga, likely to feature in an advanced position.
Right Midfielder – Eduardo Camavinga
Camavinga might play in a free-roaming role in the Real Madrid midfield, although on paper, he is likely to be utilised down the right side of the engine room.
Left Midfielder – Dani Ceballos
Ceballos is set to feature on the left side of midfield having fully recovered from his injury and played off the bench in the last couple of matches.
Attacking Midfielder – Jude Bellingham
Mbappe’s absence might mean Real Madrid play a 4-4-2, so Bellingham might play as the team’s number 10, just behind their offensive duo.
Right Striker – Rodrygo Goes
Rodrygo is likely to play as the right striker in the interior areas of the pitch.
Left Winger – Vinicius Junior
Vinicius might pair with Rodrygo as the team’s second striker though both players will interchange positions often and also drift wide to receive the ball at times.
