Steph Catley has praised Renee Slegers ahead of what could be her final match in charge of Arsenal as the Gunners play Bayern Munich in the Women’s Champions League.
Slegers has been in charge of Arsenal for the last 10 games, following the departure of Jonas Eidevall, and they are unbeaten in all of them. The 35-year-old has completely revitalised Arsenal’s season.
Despite this, the board haven’t ruled out looking at other managers and she is not guaranteed to get the full-time job.
Women’s football will take an almost month-long break starting this week and in that period Arsenal may well find a new manager.
But for now, Slegers is receiving full support, as Catley reiterated: “She is our leader at the moment and she’s done an incredible job. She’s doing a really good job of just focusing on the football and taking it one game at a time.”
Slegers herself refused to get drawn into speculation about her role, “I’m desperate for the team to perform well and keep performing well. I want to bring it back to the players.
“There has been a shift in mindset and they’ve been stepping up in many parts of what it means to be a footballer.
“They will stay together as a group and will have to keep on pushing this. In whatever way or shape I can help, I’ll be there to support. I want to keep on being a part of this team.”
