Casemiro went from hero to zero in Manchester United‘s 1-1 draw away at Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
For 80 odd minutes at Selhurst Park, the former Real Madrid man was as impressive as he was in the 2-1 win over Manchester City last weekend.
But just as we entered the final 10 minutes of normal time at Palace’s home ground, Casemiro got himself suspended for United’s crucial trip to league leaders Arsenal on Sunday.
The Brazil international scythed the dangerous Wilfried Zaha down from behind to try and preserve the Red Devils’ slender 1-0 lead, a wild challenge which left the referee with no option whatsoever.
It saw Casemiro receive his fifth yellow card of the season, an amount which warrants a one-match suspension.
To make matters even worse for the 30-year-old and the rest of his United teammates, Michael Olise salvaged a point for Palace in stoppage-time with an outrageous free-kick.
Ouch.
As well as souring a masterclass by picking up a needless booking, Casemiro was involved in a rather concerning incident during the second half at Selhurst Park.
In the 56th minute of play, the 30-year-old was approached by a pitch invader and asked to take a selfie.
Casemiro selflessly obliged. He actually took two selfies with the fan, which is part of the reason why it was so concerning.
The slowness of the security staff at Selhurst Park was worrying in the extreme and it was there on show for the whole world to see.
Check out the rather bizarre incident…
What on earth were the stewards playing at?! The fan in question was basically allowed to languidly leave the pitch at his own accord.
Twitter user and popular football writer Kristian Stuart summed it up quite perfectly by writing: “Shouldn’t we be slightly worried that a fan just managed to run the width of the pitch up to Casemiro, stand there, take two selfies uninterrupted, then walk off the pitch of his own accord before finally being picked up by two stewards who barely looked interested?”
Yes, Kristian, we should be worried.
Stewards and security staff at football have a very hard job, we all know that. However, incidents like the one involving Casemiro simply cannot be allowed to occur in the modern day.
