Carvajal defends Spain amidst Vinicius Jr’s racism allegations: “We are not a racist country” | OneFootball

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has addressed the controversy surrounding Vinicius Jr.’s comments about racism in Spain.

While acknowledging the difficulties his teammate has faced, Carvajal took a firm stance in defence of his country. In his response, he praised Vinicius Jr. but was quick to reject the idea that Spain as a whole is racist.

“There is no doubt that Spain is not a racist country,” Carvajal stated as quoted by Mundo Deportivo. He mentioned his own upbringing in Leganes, where he lived alongside people from many different nationalities.

According to him, the diversity he experienced while growing up is proof that Spain embraces people of all backgrounds.

Against racism

Carvajal was also clear in his condemnation of racism in football, stressing the importance of eliminating discriminatory behaviour from stadiums. “We are totally against any form of racism in sporting events,” he added, referring to the abuse Vinicius Jr. has endured.

Carvajal mentioned the ongoing efforts in La Liga to crack down on hooligans and implement stronger measures to prevent them from returning to stadiums.

However, he made it clear that incidents involving a few individuals should not tarnish Spain’s reputation or its ability to host major events like the World Cup.

“I just want to say that we are totally against any situation of racism in stadiums. I know what Vini suffers and we support him both internally and publicly.

“I think that LaLiga is improving and protocols are being drawn up so that the hooligans cannot return to sporting events.

“But, beyond these people, I do not consider that Spain does not deserve to celebrate a World Cup,” he added.

Spain and Ballon d’Or

In addition to his comments on racism, Carvajal expressed his excitement at the prospect of captaining the Spanish national team.

After more than a decade with the squad, he described the possibility of wearing the captain’s armband as a “dream come true.” Carvajal shared how important this honour would be for him, particularly since it has been a personal goal for so long.

Finally, Carvajal touched on the Ballon d’Or, expressing gratitude to coach Luis de la Fuente for giving him and fellow player Rodri their votes.

Although Carvajal does not consider himself a top contender for the award, he said that even being in the conversation makes him proud, especially as defenders are often overlooked in favour of goal scorers.

“It is clear that being a defender in football, what shines is the goal. But anyway, having the possibility of winning it makes me very happy,” he admitted.
