Lee Carsley has praised the performances of Trent Alexander-Arnold for England this month and said the Liverpool defender has ‘an ability to control a game’.

Alexander-Arnold struggled to win the trust of former England manager Gareth Southgate, with the 25-year-old part of an unsuccessful experiment in midfield during the summer, having not been considered in his usual position at right-back.

However, Alexander-Arnold returned to the latter role for this month’s Nations League fixtures with the Republic of Ireland and Finland and has impressed. Against the latter on Tuesday, the Liverpool full-back recorded an assist, was involved in the second goal, and created a game-leading five chances.

Carsley has heaped praise on Alexander-Arnold and said he has the ability to control games for England.

“You have seen Trent’s array of passing, an ability to control a gamem,” Carsley said at full-time.

“It’s not a surprise as we have seen him do it for Liverpool.”

Carsley has made a perfect start to his reign as interim manager, having stepped up from the u-21 role. The 50-year-old said he still feels out of his ‘comfort zone’ with the senior side but wants to build on ‘two good results’.

“I definitely don’t feel comfortable still,” Carsley added.

“I have been out of my comfort zone. It’s been enjoyable but we have had to make sure every single day we are producing high standards. We are fortunate to have got two good results so it is about building on that.”
