Sheffield Wednesday have picked up seven points from their opening three games in League One, with Darren Moore’s side hoping to secure promotion back to the Championship.

The Owls opened the season with a 3-3 draw at home to Portsmouth, before recording back-to-back 1-0 victories against MK Dons and Charlton Athletic.

Sandwiched in between those two victories was a 2-0 win over Sunderland in the League Cup, with Moore’s side showing excellent form in the early stages of the campaign.

Speaking to Football League World about Sheffield Wednesday’s start, and pointing out where the difference lie from last season, Carlton Palmer said: “Yeah, well, it’s been a hugely impressive start. They needed that.

“As I said, Darren Moore’s got a very, very good squad. He had a very, very good squad last season, but didn’t get it together until very late on, and I think that cost him in the end.

“(Now) they got the squad together early, you know, disappointing Opening Day fixture against Portsmouth, conceding three goals, but then they backed that up with three clean sheets.

“And you know, one of them being in the Carabao Cup. And if they if you said to them, they’d be sat in second place on the points tally they’re on now, it’s a superb start.”

The verdict

The Owls have picked up seven points from a difficult set of fixtures thus far, with the games not set to become any easier over the next few weeks.

Sheffield Wednesday travel to Peterborough United and Bolton Wanderers for their next two matches, with both teams hopeful about what their seasons could possibly hold.

Moore will be spirited by the fact that competition levels are exceptionally high at the moment, something that every manager aims for during summer windows.

Sitting second in the league, and only being denied top spot by goal difference, it has been an excellent start for the Yorkshire outfit, especially when considering the teams they have played.
