Arriving at Sheffield Wednesday from Wycombe Wanderers last week, veteran goalkeeper David Stockdale will be hoping to make the number one spot when the new campaign comes around.

With Joe Wildsmith set to depart Hillsborough, as things stand, it appears that Stockdale will be battling it out with Cameron Dawson for regular starting duties, with the 26-year-old impressing whilst on loan at Exeter City last season

It remains to be seen if the goalkeeping department is now set for the upcoming season, and whether it will be down to the two current options.

Delivering his opinion on the matter, Carlton Palmer told FLW that he believes that Stockdale has been brought in for regular minutes.

“He’ll (Stockdale) be the number one keeper, he said.

They’ve gone for experience, like I’ve said, to get out that league next season.

“It’s not a long-term solution to the problem. But like I said, in the short term, the priority is to get out the league.

“Stockdale is a consistent performer at this level and above. So it’s a good move for them.”

The verdict

As Palmer quite rightly points out, Stockdale has recent experience in League One and the higher division, proving to be a reliable figure for the Chairboys during his time with the club.

Dawson will certainly be battling hard for regular first-team minutes if the situation stays as it is, but the experience and ability that Stockdale will bring is likely to mean that it is the former Wycombe man who will emerge as number one.

Using the loan market just ahead of the previous season to bring in Bailey Peacock-Farrell, it remains to be seen if that is a route they will go down once again.
