  • Rotherham United have fired manager Matt Taylor following a 5-0 loss to Watford, leaving them in a precarious position in the relegation zone.
  • The team finished 19th last season and was predicted to face relegation this year, but Taylor couldn't deliver the results to prove critics wrong.
  • Neil Warnock, an experienced manager accustomed to working with limited resources, is a viable short-term option for Rotherham, but there are other potential candidates for a longer-term plan.

Rotherham United have confirmed the departure of Matt Taylor as manager.

The Championship side have part ways with the 41-year-old following a 5-0 loss to Watford last weekend.

The defeat has left the Millers sitting four points adrift of safety from the relegation zone.

Taylor took charge of the first team squad in October 2022, and guided the club to a 19th place finish in the table last season.

However, many tipped the club for relegation to League One this year and Taylor has been unable to earn the results to prove people wrong.

Who should become the next Rotherham United manager?

Carlton Palmer believes that Rotherham have to strike the balance between short-term gain and long-term benefits.

He has claimed that Neil Warnock is the obvious choice as a short-term solution, but has highlighted three potential candidates that could prove smart longer-term options instead.

“Matt Taylor has been sacked as manager of Rotherham after 16 games,” Palmer told Football League World.

“It follows a bad run of form, culminating in a 5-0 defeat at Watford at the weekend.

“Rotherham are four points from safety, with a gap starting to appear from 17th place upwards.

“It’s a really difficult one this, as I say I never advocate for managers to be sacked, but this really is a case of how long do you leave it to give yourself a chance of surviving.

“Rotherham finished in 19th place last season in the Championship, avoiding relegation by six points.

“So, probably expect to be down there, but don’t want to get too far adrift.

“You also have to take into consideration what funds are available.

“Rotherham will have one of the lowest budgets in the Championship, probably in the bottom three.

“So for that reason, you’ll feel a little bit sorry for Matt.

“The question of who will replace him, do you go for the experienced veteran Neil Warnock, which would be a short-term fix but he’s used to working with limited resources and getting results, or do you go for someone like Mark Bonner from Cambridge or Dean Holden/Paul Hurst?

“It’s clear Rotherham are just working on the here and now, so Neil Warnock is the obvious candidate if survival is the priority and aim.”

Rotherham currently sit 22nd in the Championship table following Saturday’s loss to the Hornets.

The Millers have earned 11 points from their opening 16 games, with Huddersfield Town four points ahead in 21st.

Next up for Rotherham is a home clash against Leeds United on 24 November.

Would Neil Warnock be a good appointment for Rotherham United?

Warnock knows what it takes to keep a team in this division with limited resources, so would be a smart short-term solution to their survival hopes.

However, a longer-term appointment may be the better option for the Yorkshire outfit at this stage.

There are still plenty of games left to turn things around for the team’s season, so a firefighter manager isn’t necessarily needed just yet.

Palmer highlights a number of smart options that Rotherham should be considering at this early stage of the season.
