Ross Stewart and Ellis Simms have started the new Championship campaign in strong form in front of goal for Sunderland.

Stewart emerged as a real star in League One last time out, with the forward managing to continue that form into the new season.

Now, partnered with another prolific centre-forward in Simms, it remains to be seen how the pair perform together as the campaign progresses.

Speaking to Football League World about Stewart and the expectations he holds around him for this Championship campaign, Carlton Palmer said: “Like I said before, I like Ross Stewart.

“He’s a clever forward, plays off the last man’s shoulder. He’s going to score goals, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ross scores between 12-15 himself.

“Given the service, his movement is absolutely fantastic off the last man.

Yes No

“When I watch centre-forwards, like I watch the young boy Haaland at Man City, you know, what impresses me about him is his movement.”

The verdict

It is easy to forget that Stewart had to step up immediately at the start of last season after Charlie Wyke’s departure to Wigan Athletic was confirmed.

Since then, he has emerged as a consistent scorer of goals in League One and has made a bright start to the Championship, a completely different beast.

Forming a strong partnership with Simms during the early stages of the campaign, both forwards will be targeting to score at least 15 as the season progresses, however, 20 is certainly not too far of a stretch.
