Sheffield Wednesday have now kept three successive clean sheets in all competitions, with the Owls securing a 2-0 victory at home to Sunderland last week in the Carabao Cup, amidst their two wins in the league.

Darren Moore, who has certainly managed to bolster competition levels within his squad during the summer transfer, could see Cup competitions this season as rather beneficial to those on the fringes.

With the league being their bread and butter, the League Cup can keep those just outside the first XI competing.

Speaking to Football League World about the League Cup amidst their third-tier campaign, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: “Well, (the) priority for Sheffield Wednesday is promotion, everybody knows that’s the priority.

The verdict

There are certainly pros and cons to having a very strong squad available to you as a manager, however, Moore will most likely see the competitive nature of his squad as a good thing.

No player in his side is guaranteed game time and that can help prevent complacency from leaking into the team.

The midfield area is looking particularly strong at present, and whilst it could lead to players becoming unhappy, it could also bolster performance levels from those who do eventually get the nod.
