Carlos Tevez has announced his retirement from football at 38 years old, citing the death of his father as the reason.
Tevez's adopted father Segundo Raimundo died following Covid-19 complications last year, and in his announcement he stated he found it 'very difficult' to play without his 'number one fan' watching (quotes via mundoalbiceleste).
“I have retired, it’s confirmed. They offered me many things, including from the United States. But that’s it, I have given everything. Playing the last year was very difficult but I was able to see my old man. I stopped playing because I lost my number one fan.”
The 38-year-old also revealed that he had turned down offers to play in the USA - one of the few countries that Tevez didn't ply his trade in throughout his storied career.
Tevez played for seven different teams across three different continents, with his prime years coming while in Europe with West Ham, Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus. The forward was prolific in this period, scoring 164 goals and winning three Premier League titles, two Scudetti, one FA Cup, one Coppa Italia, the FIFA Club World Cup and the 2008 UEFA Champions League.
The final years of Tevez's career were spent at his boyhood club Boca Juniors where he spent 12 seasons across three different spells.
