West Bromwich Albion head coach Carlos Corberan has revealed that Matt Phillips suffered a muscular injury during last night’s FA Cup clash with Chesterfield.

Phillips was brought on in the second-half of this particular fixture and could not be withdrawn in stoppage-time after sustaining this issue due to the fact that Albion had already made five substitutions.

After the two sides could not be separated earlier this month at the Technique Stadium, West Brom sealed a comfortable victory over Chesterfield yesterday.

John Swift opened the scoring for the Baggies in the 23rd minute of this fixture as he slotted an effort past goalkeeper Lucas Covolan.

Following the break, Tom Rogic doubled West Brom’s advantage before Jake Livermore added a third.

Jovan Malcolm then netted his first senior goal as he headed home from Conor Townsend’s cross.

West Brom are set to face Bristol City in the fourth round of the FA Cup on January 28th.

After his side’s meeting with Chesterfield, Corberan issued an update on Phillips’ injury.

Speaking to the Express & Star, the Baggies boss said: “In some moments we played well, in some moments we were poor, the best thing about the night was the result, the worst thing was the injury to Phillips.

“He was feeling something in the muscle, quadriceps that didn’t allow him to continue in the game.

“He will see the doctor tomorrow but it looks like has an injury in the quadriceps of the right leg.

“Every time you play it’s a risk, every time you train it’s a risk, but it’s true that now we have some problems at the front of the attack.

“Grant, Asante, now with Phillips.

“The next days will be used to find the solution.”

The Verdict

West Brom will be hoping that Phillips’ issue does not turn out to be too serious as the winger has managed to produce some promising performances for the club in recent months.

The 31-year-old recently helped his side secure a 3-2 win over Luton Town by providing an assist for Townsend’s goal at Kenilworth Road.

Having chipped in four direct goal contributions this season, Phillips will be looking to add to this tally on a regular basis when he is fit enough to feature again.

If the winger is ruled out for a considerable period of time, Corberan will have to turn to Grady Diangana for inspiration in this particular position.

Given that Diangana started for West Brom in their meeting with Chesterfield, he could potentially retain his place in the side for Friday’s clash with Burnley.
