The Baggies boss thinks his side should have been awarded a penalty during the second-half at Ewood Park

West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan was left fuming with referee John Busby after his side were not awarded a penalty during their goalless draw with Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night.

The Spaniard believes his side should have been awarded a spot-kick during the second-half at Ewood Park, as Todd Cantwell looked to have fouled Darnell Furlong in the penalty area.

But after the two came together, Busby was unforthcoming, leaving the Baggies heading home from Lancashire with a third consecutive draw to their name, and no win in their last five league matches.

The flashpoint left Corberan puzzled at the final whistle, with the Albion boss claiming that the man in the middle ‘didn’t understand enough’.

It was a game of few clear cut chances at Ewood Park on Wednesday night, as neither Rovers or Albion gave an inch against a fellow member of the early leading pack.

Furlong and Torbjorn Heggem both had efforts that went wide of Aynsley Pears’ goal during the first-half, while Joe Rankin-Costello had two efforts fly past the post at the other end.

But it was in the second stanza where Corberan believes his side should have had the opportunity to open the scoring from the spot, as Grady Diangana looked to pick out Furlong as he charged into the penalty area.

But with the Albion man jostling with Cantwell as he looked to pick up possession, he soon went to ground, and looked desperately at Busby for any sort of reaction, with a goal-kick promptly given.

The decision incensed the West Brom players at the time, and after the match, Corberan was keen to make his views felt on the incident.

He told Birmingham Live: "I think the action of the penalty, live, Furlong received a foul. A foul in the box, it’s a penalty. Because he was in the position and the defender (Cantwell) makes a foul to avoid the finishing of Furlong.

"In these actions, the referee didn’t understand enough probably to issue a penalty. It has not been a penalty because the referee didn’t whistle. But live, it was an obvious one."

West Bromwich Albion winless run continues

Albion are now without a win in their last five league games after Wednesday’s stalemate, with a third successive draw earned against John Eustace’s side.

Having come flying out the blocks with five wins from their first six league matches of the season, the Baggies have since picked up three points from the last 15 available, and risk losing pace with those at the top of the table.

With just one goal in their last four outings, Albion are struggling to convert the chances that come their way, and will be looking to address that when Cardiff City come to the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.

But having kept Rovers at bay throughout the 90 minutes, Corberan was pleased with his side’s efforts overall at Ewood Park, despite the lack of winning goal.

He continued: “Probably the fair result. I think that we had to put an unbelievable level of effort to achieve a point. I think we had possibilities to score the goal. In general, I value a lot the effort that the players had tonight to achieve the point."
