Santos Laguna goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo made his MLS All-Star debut, participating in the Skills Challenge and game against the best of the American League.
Though Liga MX walked away with a 2-1 defeat in the match, and a 3-2 overall score in the Skills Challenge, the goalkeeper labeled the experience a 'one of a kind'.
“It was an incredible experience, the atmosphere. Obviously, we would have liked to take the victory, but it was an enriching experience,” Acevedo told 90min. “I leave here very happy to have participated in this type of event.”
Acevedo served as one of three goalkeepers called up to the 26-player Liga MX roster, alongside Atlas FC figure Camilo Vargas and Pachuca’s Oscar Ustari. He was the last player to join the team, coming in as Mikel Arriola's one and only pick.
The Liga MX president held the task of selecting one player that managed a standout 2021 campaign, while embodying the essence of the league, and Acevedo represents just that. The Santos Laguna homegrown's success story led the team to an 8W-7L-11D record last season and six clean sheets.
This year, the goalkeeper has kept two clean sheets in six games, as Santos Laguna sit in sixth on the Liga MX table.
Acevedo's career in Liga MX propelled him to reach the Mexican national team, earning three caps so far since debuting in December 2021 in a friendly against Chile. While Club America’s Guillermo Ochoa remains locked in as Mexico’s starting goalkeeper for the World Cup, Acevedo is fighting for a spot on that 26-player roster.
