Real Madrid returned to winning ways with victory over Villarreal in the Copa del Rey on Thursday evening.

Los Blancos were defeated by Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana last weekend.

It looked as if they were going to taste defeat once again when they were 2-0 down to Villarreal at half-time.

But Carlo Ancelotti’s side pulled off a spirited comeback in the second half.

Goals from Vinicius Jr and Eder Militao meant the scores were level going into the final 20 minutes of the match.

And it was the Madrid giants that won it courtesy of Dani Ceballos’ strike with four minutes of normal time remaining.

Rodrygo angers Carlo Ancelotti after being substituted off

Rodrygo Goes started the match but he didn’t have his best match.

The Brazilian played 56 minutes before making way for Marco Asensio.

The youngster was visibly disappointed as he made his way to the bench and did not acknowledge Ancelotti at all.

That angered the Italian manager.

Ancelotti was not about to let Rodrygo’s actions slide and responded by giving his player a piece of his mind.

What did Carlo Ancelotti say about Rodrygo after Villarreal vs Real Madrid?

Ancelotti’s mood soon improved as he watched his side fight back and progress to the last 8 of the Copa del Rey.

He played down his altercation with Rodrygo after the final whistle.

“At half-time, we saw that Rodrygo had a muscle that was a little overloaded. So, we decided to make an early substitution. He didn’t shake my hand as he came off, maybe because he forgot,” he said, per Goal.

Who will Real Madrid play in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals?

Real Madrid have been handed a mouth-watering tie against Atletico Madrid in the last eight of the Copa del Rey.

The match will be played at the Santiago Bernabeu on either 24, 25 and 26 January 2023.​​​​​​​
