Despite a 4-0 victory over Genk on Tuesday evening, Carlo Ancelotti has taken charge of his last game as Napoli manager.

Napoli’s season has been plagued by internal friction and rumours before Tuesday’s game suggested Ancelotti would either resign or be sacked regardless of the result.

Speaking to the media after the match, the 60-year-old denied he would step down but did confirm he would hold talks about his future with president Aurelio De Laurentiis.

And a statement released via the club’s official Twitter account shortly before midnight confirmed the coach has been dismissed.

“SSC Napoli have decided to part company with firs-team coach Carlo Ancelotti,” read the statement.

“The friendship, esteem and mutual respect between the club, president Aurelio De Laurentiis and Carlo Ancelotti remain intact.”

Former AC Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso is expected to be appointed as Ancelotti’s successor and could be in charge when the Partenopei take on Parma in Serie A on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ancelotti has recently been linked with the vacant manager’s job at Premier League Everton.

The former Chelsea boss leaves Naples with the club 7th in Serie A but their win over Genk means they have qualified for the Champions League last 16 as group runners-up.
