Real Madrid secured a key advantage in their Champions League matchup against Atletico Madrid by registering a hard-fought 2-1 win in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.
However, the margin of Real Madrid’s victory could have been much higher had it not been for some indecision from the attackers in front of goal.
The performances of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius, in particular, were concerning as both struggled to make any impact on last night’s game.
Although coach Carlo Ancelotti, in the post-match presser, defended the duo citing Atletico Madrid’s rigid defence, this is something Real Madrid clearly need to be mindful of.
As a matter of fact, Ancelotti has already publicly and private expressed concerns about the need to finish chances during decisive moments of the game, reports MARCA.
An ideal case in point was last night’s game, where Mbappe and Vinicius had an ideal opportunity to combine quickly and score in the 91st minute.

However, both players squandered the opportunity. Mbappe’s attempted low-driven cross was not convincing while Vinicius simply had no idea what to do with the ball.
If Real Madrid were able to capitalise on the opportunity, the equation of the tie could have been a lot different heading into the second leg.
That is why Ancelotti has started to flag Real Madrid’s inability to convert chances in decisive moments. He fears that somewhere down the line, this might cost his team dearly.
A key solution to this problem will be Mbappe and Vinicius and if they can manage to step up and produce their best ever performance, as we approach the final phase of the campaign.
In fact, recovering the best form of Mbappe has become one of Real Madrid coaching staff’s key obsessions. Whether or not they manage to revive the Mbappe that played against Man City last month remains to be seen.
