Cardiff City have paid Nantes the remainder of the transfer fee owed to Les Canaris for the transfer of Emiliano Sala, an official statement has confirmed. The Welsh club have paid two further instalments worth a reported €11m after they were ordered to complete payments to Nantes by FIFA. The Championship side made their first payment to Nantes in January this year.
The two clubs have been involved in a feud over transfer fee payments and liability since Sala tragically passed away during a plane crash en route to Wales in 2019. Sala became Cardiff’s club record signing before the tragedy occurred.
Despite paying the two remaining instalments to the Ligue 1 club, Cardiff plan to proceed with legal action against Nantes. The Welsh capital club have claimed damages of €110m over the death of the Argentine striker against last season’s defeated Coupe de France finalists.
Cardiff’s official club statement reads, “Cardiff City today paid the second and third instalments of the transfer fee for Emiliano Sala, as recently ordered to do by FIFA. This is despite there not yet being a judicial decision about FC Nantes’ liability for the crash. We continue to work towards those responsible being held accountable. We look forward to the trial before the French court next year.”
