The 22-year old has impressed during his time with the Owls, making 17 appearances in League One during his stint with the club.

McGuinness was even awarded the club’s player of the month award for December and November, such was his impact in Darren Moore’s side.

But it is expected that he will return to the Welsh outfit for the start of next week, following Wednesday’s clash with Newcastle United on Saturday.

The decision has been made off the back of his performances, with the loan move being considered as having served its purpose.

McGuinness played 33 times for Cardiff in the Championship last season, but has gone out and furthered his development with some added experience at a lower level.

Mark Hudson has been impressed with his displays and now feels it is time for an all hands on deck approach as the club looks to avoid a relegation battle in 2023.

The Verdict

McGuinness became a firm fan favourite with his performances for Wednesday so it will come as a blow for Moore to lose such a player.

However, Cardiff will be gaining a defender in good form and bursting with confidence.

This is a smart move to improve Hudson’s options within the squad and makes a good use of the loan system.

Making the decision early in the month also gives Wednesday plenty of time to sort out any potential replacement, so they can’t have too many complaints about this situation.
