Cardiff City have benefitted massively from the addition of both Tommy Doyle and Cody Drameh on loan deals back in the winter window – and Steve Morison has admitted to Wales Online that other clubs will be looking at signing him come summer.

Before the turn of the year, the Bluebirds were struggling at the bottom end of the table and had already seen Mick McCarthy relieved of his duties as boss of the Welsh outfit.

Morison stepped into the breach and managed to steady the ship and whilst they are still 17th and are in the bottom half of the division, they have 49 points and are clear of the drop zone now.

Quiz: Did Cardiff City sign these 26 players for a fee or a free?

The Bluebirds have been rejuvenated since the turn of the year, with the boss having made some shrewd additions in the winter window. He bolstered their strikeforce with the additions of Jordan Hugill and Uche Ikpeazu and then turned to the Premier League to add some quality to the side, bringing in Cody Drameh and Tommy Doyle on loan deals.

The latter two have both performed admirably during their short-term deals too. The former of the duo has played 16 times in the Championship so far, bagging three assists and dominating on the right flank for the club. The latter has made a midfield role his own, with 14 league outings, two goals and two assists.

Both have become some of the first names on the teamsheet every week – and Morison has admitted to Wales Online that whilst he would like to bring them back again their showings have led to clubs higher up the football pyramid asking him about them over securing potential deals of their own.

He said about the pair: “Unfortunately, they have come on loan to us, him [Doyle] and Cody, for example, and done so well, no doubt people will be looking at the other end of the table to us. They will be looking and thinking, ‘Imagine what they could be doing in our team!’

“You look at both of them, I’ve had phone calls from managers higher up the table on both of them players, asking what they are like as characters etc. They know where I stand on it all, those football clubs (Man City and Leeds United).

“If Tommy, Cody, whoever it was, wanted to pick the phone up and say, ‘Look, we want to come to you next season on loan’, I will make that happen. But I’m also a realist and understand that some people, we just can’t compete with.”

The Verdict

Tommy Doyle and Cody Drameh have both excelled in the Championship and if neither are going to get gametime at their parent clubs again next season, they could definitely perform at the top end of the second tier.

Cardiff would no doubt love to have them back again – and if Morison does get a full season with the duo, then they could be looking much higher up the division next year. However, if other, bigger, sides do come sniffing around as the manager says, then it might be hard to convince them to rejoin the Welsh outfit.

Cardiff right now are not a club that look like they are title challengers, nor automatic promotion worriers either. That means if another side currently in the top six doesn’t quite make it into the Premier League and tries to sign either of them, they will look a more attractive proposition on paper right now.

If the Bluebirds do manage to land either of them again though – or both – then it would be a huge boost next season and could certainly help drag them much further up the league.
