Details of the Carabao Cup quarter-final draw are below.
It will take place after the conclusion of the Tottenham v Man City match tonight.
That game kicks off at 8.15pm on Wednesday, half an hour later than Newcastle v Chelsea at St James’ Park.
Wednesday night will see Newcastle’s match go straight to penalties if scores are level after 90 minutes, no extra-time will be played. For those not at St James’ Park, the 7.45pm kick-off on Wednesday 30 October will be shown on Sky Sports+.
Tuesday night saw two of the eight Carabao Cup last 16 ties settled.
Southampton going 2-0 up before Championship side Stoke levelled it. An 88th minute winner saving Saints from a penalty shootout.
Speaking of which, Brentford taking an early lead but second tier Sheffield Wednesday getting a second half equaliser last night. The Premier League side needing a 5-4 penalty shootout victory to take them through.
For any Newcastle United fans looking for positive signs…
When getting to Wembley two years ago in the Carabao Cup, the first couple of rounds saw United with a single goal winning margin against a League Two side (Tranmere) and defeated Premier League opposition (Palace) in a penalty shootout. Before going on to defeat another three Premier League teams (Bournemouth, Leicester and Southampton) to reach Wembley.
This season, whilst they have done it in a different order, Eddie Howe’s team have had a single goal winning margin against a League Two side (AFC Wimbledon) and defeated Premier League opposition Forest) in a penalty shootout.
To repeat the 2023 Wembley visit, Newcastle United will almost certainly have to repeat the feat of defeating another three Premier League clubs, Chelsea plus two others. Last night’s defeats for Sheff Wed and Stoke leave Preston as the only non-Premier League side left in the Carabao Cup. With Arsenal massive favourites in that match, if United can defeat Chelsea, then they will almost certainly find seven other Premier League clubs in the quarter-finals.
A win against Chelsea and then drawing Southampton or Brentford at home, for a chance of a two-legged semi-final, sounds like a pretty ideal Wednesday night for Newcastle United. Here’s hoping.
