Newcastle United face a daunting challenge in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final: stopping Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who has already netted 32 goals this season.
The Egyptian wizard was kept relatively quiet in their last meeting at Anfield, thanks to a standout defensive display by Lewis Hall. However, with Hall ruled out for the rest of the season due to a foot injury, Newcastle must find a new way to contain Salah.
The Brazilian midfielder, Joelinton is an important part of Newcastle's left wing. He will be used both offensively and defensively as the team tries to take advantage of Liverpool's weaknesses while keeping their own safe. Tino Livramento is expected to start at left-back. He, alongside Joelinton will be tasked with disrupting Salah’s rhythm while also contributing offensively.
Eddie Howe has praised Joelinton’s impact since his return, highlighting his physicality, work rate, and ability to disrupt play. “We miss him when he’s not there,” Howe said.
"He's (Joelinton) such an important player for us attacking. He can pop up with a goal when needed, so hopefully he plays a big game.”"Eddie Howe
Joelinton’s presence will be vital, especially with Anthony Gordon suspended and Harvey Barnes stepping into the lineup. The Brazilian’s ability to cover ground, tackle, and link play could be the key to neutralizing Salah’s threat.
Howe emphasized the importance of a team effort to stop Salah, rather than relying on individual matchups. “It’s always about the team,” he said. “Whenever there's an outstanding individual, and Liverpool have a few in different positions, attacking player-wise, and I think of making sure our structures are good, not about any individuals." Salah has already shown his quality against Newcastle this season, scoring a brace in their 3-3 draw at St James’ Park in December. While he was less effective in their recent meeting at Anfield, he still provided an assist, proving his ability to influence games even when not at his best.
