The Carabao Cup isn’t exactly glamorous but we were treated to some brilliant storylines on Tuesday night.
Here’s what we took from the third round kick-offs …
After facing Aston Villa just 48 hours earlier, a youthful Arsenal side put five past Nottingham Forest at Emirates Stadium.
18-year-old Gabriel Martinelli headed home the opener, before Rob Holding – making his first appearance after nine months out – and Joe Willock put the game beyond doubt.
Reiss Nelson added a fourth before Martinelli completed his brace in injury time.
League Two outfit Colchester without doubt achieved upset of the night after beating Tottenham on penalties.
Neither side could be separated at full time, and after Lucas Moura hit the bar, Tom Lapslie finished with aplomb to send visitors crashing out.
The U’s deserved their win and you can’t beat a good pitch invasion.
Crawley Town added to Stoke City’s misery after their penalty shootout win at Broadfield Stadium.
Sam Vokes put the Potters ahead before Nathan Ferguson equalised for the hosts after 38 minutes.
However, Stoke were made to play with 10-men after Nathan Collins’ second-half dismissal, leading up to their 5-3 shootout defeat.
On what looked to be a potential banana skin fixture, Leicester breezed through against Luton at Kenilworth Road.
Goals from Demarai Gray, former Hatters defender James Justin, Youri Tielemans and Kelechi Iheanacho saw the Foxes win comfortably – limiting the hosts to just three shots all game.
In the first South Coast derby since 2012, Southampton took home the bragging rights in what was an entertaining game.
After a poor start, Danny Ings proved decisive with two smart first-half finishes, before Cédric and Nathan Redmond adding a third and fourth late on.
Manchester City cruised through their tie against Preston despite naming a heavily rotated side.
Raheem Sterling finished well after 19 minutes, before Gabriel Jesus and a Ryan Ledson own goal did the damage before half-time.
Everton and Marco Silva returned to winning ways with an impressive performance against Sheffield Wednesday.
An accomplished first-half brace from Dominic Calvert-Lewin was enough to put the Toffees through at Hillsborough.
Watford were made to battle hard for their first win under Quique Sanchez Flores after beating Swansea at Vicarage Road.
Danny Welbeck put them ahead – heading home his first goal for the club – before Roberto Pereyra hit the winner on 75 minutes.
