Fabio Capello believes that it will be ‘difficult’ for Theo Hernandez to play at San Siro in the future after his red card cost AC Milan their place in the Champions League.
Milan’s European journey came to an end in rather embarrassing fashion as they drew 1-1 with Feyenoord at San Siro, which meant that they lost 2-1 on aggregate.
When we say ’embarrassing’ it is not at all a dig at the opposition, who admittedly arrived with a long injury list and a caretaker manager in charge, but rather how the game unfolded.
Milan took the lead after just 36 seconds as Santiago Gimenez netted from close range, but then Theo’s red card changed the game completely. Julian Carranza came off the bench to equalise and send the Dutch side through.
Capello was covering the game as a pundit for Sky and after the full-time whistle he offered his thoughts on the madness that he had just seen from Theo, with MilanNews relaying his comments.
“First half: too many missed opportunities. When you make a mistake, there is the unexpected. And the unexpected was Theo. He got booked for something childish, a push. And then he did something that a strict, fair referee considered simulation,” he said.
“After the red, something completely different happened: they [Feyenoord] started to have courage and equalised. And then the ball never goes in by itself: the defender must look at the man, not the ball.
“Now it will be difficult for him to play at San Siro. Because his red card was very serious. Milan were dominating, then the game changed. When you do something stupid, your teammates aren’t happy, just like the fans aren’t happy and the coach isn’t happy.
“He’s so passive in many games. At Milan, the left side was something more, this year it wasn’t there. I don’t understand why he doesn’t play with that ease and naturalness.”
