Motsepe Foundation Championship side Cape Town City have completed the signing of former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Sfiso Ngobeni on a free transfer after he parted ways with the Brazilians at the end of last season.

The left-back joined Masandawana as one of the highly rated players from the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic in 2021. However, he was immediately sent out on loan to SuperSport United in his first season at the club.

Upon his return to his parent club at the end of his loan spell, Ngobeni was once again sent out on loan to AmaZulu, where he spent the past two seasons with the KZN side, mostly on the bench as competition for a starting spot was rife.

Sundowns opted to cut ties with Ngobeni as they boast a host of players in the left-back position with the likes of Aubrey Modiba, Terrence Mashego, Asekho Tiwani, Divine Lunga and the newly signed Fawaaz Basadien.

Now, Ngobeni is set for a new chapter in the second-tier as the Citizens were relegated to the NFD after failing to save their Betway Premiership status in the PSL Promotion/Relegation playoffs, which saw Orbit College gain promotion instead.

As a result, the John Comitis-owned team lost experienced campaigners to topflight teams, with long serving duo Thamsanqa Mkhize and Thabo Nodada headlining the exits, along with playmaker Haashim Domingo, among others.

City appointed Dutch trainer Jan Vreman in a bid to secure an immediate return to the elite league. The 59-year-old tactician spent most of his career in his homeland with De Graafschap, a second division team.

The Citizens will face Venda FC at Athlone Stadium in their opening match of the Motsepe Foundation Championship on 23 August. It remains to be seen how the Cape club will fare under the UEFA Pro License holder.
