Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher has certainly proved that he is more than a just a back-up goalkeeper.

With Alisson Becker sidelined, Kelleher is set to make his 50th appearance for the club against Chelsea, a team he has enjoyed upsetting in the League Cup on numerous occasions.

By the final whistle he will have played more matches, appeared in more cup finals, and won more trophies than several former first-choice goalkeepers.

The Irish keeper has certainly established himself a worthy replacement in recent seasons and has always been confident stepping into Alisson's shoes. Jurgen Klopp even referred to him as "the best number two goalkeeper in the world".

Kelleher's "not nice" message to Alisson

The 25-year-old is set to be between the sticks for at least seven games after Alisson picked up a hamstring injury of the season against Crystal Palace leaving him out of Arne Slot's side until after the November international break. It is the second time the Brazilian has been injured already this season.

In an exclusive interview with the Telegraph, Kelleher, who missed the Palace game due to illness, revealed the text message he sent to Alisson after he got injured.

“I am good mates with Ali [Alisson]. We are close so I sent him a text to say sorry about the injury" said Kelleher. "It is not nice for him and I don’t like to see that happen to anyone.

“It has been beneficial for me training with someone of such high quality. You obviously learn from that and it brings you on."

Who will be Liverpool's no.1 goalkeeper?

Kelleher has been open about wanting to move away from Anfield last summer to play more first-team football. However, the Reds rejected offers from Nottingham Forest determined to keep the player on Merseyside.

However with the addition of Giorgi Mamardashvili next summer who has already warned the club he plans to take the number one spot, the competition to be the first-choice keeper will certainly be an interesting one.

Kelleher is entering the last 18 months of his current contract and while the Reds may want to keep him, it wouldn't be a surprise if he decided to push for a move elsewhere next summer.
