According to a report via L’Équipe, Ligue 1’s historical broadcaster Canal+ currently have no plans to enter discussions to replace DAZN as the League’s TV provider, despite the French Football League (LFP) being locked in open conflict with the British broadcaster. On the 28th February the Paris Commercial Court will rule on part of the dispute between DAZN and the LFP. The league had decided to take emergency legal action to try and force DAZN to pay the €35 million that it has placed in escrow. DAZN argues that the league has failed to meet contractual obligations, particularly in combating piracy and ensuring that clubs contribute to improving the product and its content. Many in French football, including RMC Sport journalist Daniel Riolo as well as RC Lens President Joseph Oughourlian, have cited Canal+ as the way out of the current TV rights crisis engulfing French football. “The first solution would be to make our own channel,” said Oughourlian in a recent interview with Le Parisien. “Many people at the League don’t understand it and certain conflicts of interest mean that this option will be very complicated to implement. The second is to go back to serious people like Canal +.”Yet, L’Équipe understands that France’s historic broadcaster currently have no plans to enter discussions to take over Ligue 1’s TV rights.
