Following Canada’s 2-1 victory over Japan in their second tune-up fixture ahead of the 2022 World Cup, full-back Alistair Johnston gave his perspective of the match in a post-match interview.

Despite falling behind 1-0 under ten minutes, Herdman’s squad demonstrated strength and resilience as they managed to complete the comeback followed by set-piece goal from central defender Steven Vitoria and a last-gasp penalty from marksman Lucas Cavallini.

While speaking to the media, as relayed by Canadian network TSN, the CF Montreal defender described the importance of the victory going into their first match against Belgium on the 23rd of November:

“You know, I think we’ve had some really good performances in the lead up this World Cup. But, to finally get one over the line against a team like Japan shows that we can also beat these teams. And I think that’s a really special moment. This entire group, accepted the task against a really good side. That Brotherhood that we push, it encompasses so many different things. And we didn’t put our heads down. We learned from that Uruguay match. We learned who we are.”
