The Canadian Men’s National Team have secured the talents of dual-national Niko Sigur.
After representing Croatia at the U21 level, it was confirmed late Tuesday evening that the 20-year-old defensive midfielder will now represent Canada at senior level.
Sigur, born in Burnaby, British Columbia, currently plays with Hajduk Split. He is a familiar name for the Canadian national team having been courted by then-manager John Herdman back in 2023.
An old post on X from the Croatian Football Federation shared Sigur felt it was the “right and best decision” to previously commit to Croatia. Now, he will fight for playing time in Jesse Marsch’s midfield and compete with Samuel Piette for minutes.
“It was an honour to represent Croatia, which is a football superpower and which is my family’s homeland,” Sigur said on the switch.
“But with the passage of time I felt that I wanted to represent the country where I grew up and started my football career, Canada.
“I appreciate the open communication and understanding of this decision by HNS (Croatian Football Federation) and I thank the coaches and teammates in the national team for the time I spent as a young Croatian national team member. I will always be a big fan of Croatia, to whom I wish good luck and success.”
According to The Athletic, Canada Soccer is hoping he can debut during the October international break.
