CHARLOTTE, N.C.Canada and Uruguay drew 2-2, with the South Americans winning 4-3 on penalties, in the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America third place match on Saturday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Rodrigo Bentancur opened the scoring in the 8' to place Uruguay in the lead with a left-footed hit following a corner kick service into the box.

Canada goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, who was making his Copa America debut, made a block in the 18’ to deny a shot on target from Maximiliano Araujo.

Tani Oluwaseyi nearly connected at the right post with a cross Jacob Shaffelburg in the 21’ but was denied by Sebastian Caceres.

Ismael Kone tied the match in the 22' with a right-footed hit inside the box to redirect the ball backward off the ensuing corner kick.

Ali Ahmed found Oluwaseyi inside the box in the 41’ but the latter’s header went wide.

Jonathan Osorio had a hit in the 43’ but was blocked by Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet. Osorio had a header towards goal on the rebound, but Nahitan Nandez cleared his attempt in front of the goal line.

Oluwaseyi was blocked by Rochet in the 60’ as the match remained level into the second half.

Derek Cornelius had an essential block in the box in the 70’ to deny Brian Rodriguez.

Alphonso Davies struck from outside the box in the 71’ but was just inches off the right post.

Jonathan David struck inside the box in the 80’ to place the Concacaf nation in the lead. Kone caused the rebound with a shot from distance that was blocked by Rochet.

Luis Suarez struck inside the box in the 90’+2 to tie the match late to force a penalty shoot-out.

In the penalty shootout, Canada started with Jonathan David scoring the first goal, followed by Valverde equalizing for Uruguay. Bombito kept the Canadians ahead, Bentancur made it 2-2, and Ismael Koné’s penalty was saved by goalkeeper Sergio Rochet. Giorgian de Arrascaeta made it 3-2 for the South Americans, Mathieu Choiniere kept the Canadians in the fight, Luis Suárez made it 4-3, and Alphonso Davies hit the crossbar to seal Uruguay's victory.

  • At 18 years and 276 days old, Luc De Fougerolles (Canada) became the youngest player to start in a CONMEBOL Copa America match for a Concacaf team.
  • Jonathan David finished the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America as Canada's top scorer, with two goals. Of his 28 total goals for the national team, 27 were in competitive tournaments and only one in a friendly match.
  • Canada and Uruguay combined for 11 shots and 3.5 expected goals, the highest records in a 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America match outside the group stage. Additionally, it was the second match in the current edition where both teams had five or more shots on target.
