Canada Women won gold at the Olympic Games for the first time in the nationâs history with a penalty shootout victory over Sweden in Yokohama following a 1-1 draw.
Scorers: Blackstenius 34âČ; Fleming pen 67âČ
They started strongly but the better early openings went the way of their opponents, with Stephanie LabbĂ© standing strong â not for the first time this summer.
But she was beaten on the 34-minute mark as the always reliable Stina Blackstenius was picked out on the area to slot an effort low past Labbé at her right for the half-time lead.
That strike also makes the 25-year-old her countryâs all-time top scorer at the Olympics with seven.
Midway through the second half, a contentious VAR-awarded penalty gave Beverly Priestmanâs side the chance to level, which Jessie Fleming made the most of by calmly sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
With no further goals following, it took more penalties to decide who would top the podium and in a tense shootout, Kosovare Allsani hit the post and Caroline Seger blasted over when she had the chance to win it but it was LabbĂ©âs two saves which proved pivotal as Canada came back from the dead on spot-kicks to win it 3-2 on sudden death.
