CAN Women 2024: Senegal fall to South Africa and exit in the quarter-finals
The Lionesses of Teranga bowed out on penalties after 120 minutes of courageous football. The Senegalese were defeated by South Africa (0-0, 4-1 on penalties) this Saturday, July 19, 2025, in the quarter-finals of the 2024 CAN Women’s tournament. The defending champions advance to the semi-finals and continue their quest for a second consecutive title.
At the Stade d'Honneur in Oujda, the Banyana Banyana faced off against the Lionesses of Teranga for a place in the last four. The match was intense but offered few clear-cut chances. The first half set the tone, featuring long-range shots that missed the target and decisive interventions from both goalkeepers. Haby Baldé, Mama Diop, and Nguenar Ndiaye tried to break the deadlock for Senegal, but to no avail. On the other side, Jermaine Seoposenwe and Hildah Magaia led the South African charge, but goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye stood firm.
With the scoreline unchanged after two fiercely contested periods of extra time, the penalty shootout decided the outcome. Goalkeeper Andile Dhlamini was the hero, saving two Senegalese attempts. For South Africa, Karabo Dhlamini, Tiisetso Makhubela, Gabriela Salgado, and Bambanani Mbane all found the back of the net, while Senegal only converted once through Mama Diop. Thanks to this mentally tough victory, South Africa are through to the semi-finals. Dhlamini and her teammates remain in the hunt to retain their continental crown.
