Liverpool’s strategy of loaning out young talent continues to reap rewards, with several players thriving in their temporary homes this season. Stoke City, under the stewardship of sporting director Jonathan Walters, has been one of the notable beneficiaries. Speaking to Stoke Sentinel, Walters shared his insights on loan deals, highlighting the development of Liverpool’s Lewis Koumas and Stoke’s hopes of extending his stay.
Liverpool’s academy graduates have been making waves in the Championship this season. Among them is Lewis Koumas, a versatile forward excelling at Stoke City. At just 19 years old, Koumas has demonstrated his potential, racking up over 1,000 minutes of game time, contributing three goals, and featuring in various positions under manager Narcis Pelach.

Koumas’ progress mirrors that of other Liverpool loanees, such as Ben Doak, thriving at Middlesbrough and already a Scottish international, and Owen Beck, impressing at Blackburn Rovers while earning caps for Wales. These examples underscore Liverpool’s ability to develop players through competitive loan spells, ensuring they are ready for the next step in their careers.
Jonathan Walters was quick to highlight the mutual benefits of these loan deals. Reflecting on Koumas’ impact, Walters expressed his satisfaction with Stoke’s development programme and the opportunities it provides to young players.
“There’s a big thing made about loans and recall clauses in January,” Walters told the Stoke Sentinel. “Almost every single loan, 99 per cent, will have clauses like that because if your player’s not playing, you’ll want to call him back. If your player’s playing and has been called up for the international team, why would you want to call him back?”
This pragmatic approach has not only helped Koumas flourish but also strengthened relationships with Liverpool. Walters explained, “You come, you develop, we invite the loan managers down to come and watch. You hope you’re doing well for them as a club and then next year, can we have them again?”
Building strong relationships with parent clubs is integral to Stoke’s strategy, according to Walters. Speaking about his collaboration with Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes, Walters said, “They’re all really good guys and we’re building relationships. I hope other teams are looking and thinking, ‘I want to send a player to Stoke because I know what they produce.’”

The emphasis on coaching and player development at Stoke has not gone unnoticed. Walters added, “We’ll help them, coach them, develop them, put in the messages that need putting into them. It’s not just me saying that, I see it happening.”
Walters’ proactive engagement with loan managers ensures that the players’ progress aligns with Liverpool’s expectations. His commitment to fostering talent through meaningful game time and structured development could pave the way for more high-calibre loans in the future.
For Liverpool fans, the words of Jonathan Walters will spark both pride and intrigue. Seeing academy graduates like Lewis Koumas, Ben Doak, and Owen Beck thrive on loan showcases the strength of Liverpool’s youth system. Walters’ willingness to collaborate closely with Liverpool only strengthens the club’s confidence in Stoke as a loan destination.
Koumas’ performances, in particular, could make his recall a tantalising prospect for Liverpool supporters. His versatility and maturity beyond his years suggest he could offer Arne Slot’s side valuable depth in the near future. However, fans must weigh this against the benefits of another full season at Stoke, where consistent minutes in a competitive league may better serve his long-term development.
Walters’ emphasis on creating an environment that boosts “asset value” will resonate with Liverpool’s strategic focus. With Arne Slot now leading the Reds, the integration of these returning loanees into a dynamic, high-pressing system becomes an exciting possibility.
Liverpool supporters will also hope that these successful loan stories encourage more youngsters to step up and make an impact, ensuring the club remains a powerhouse in nurturing talent.
