The Lionesses of Teranga make a thunderous start by overpowering the DR Congo Leopards in Mohammedia.
The Senegal Lionesses dominated and overwhelmed DR Congo with an emphatic 4-0 victory this Sunday, July 6, 2025, in their opening match of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The Senegalese players now top Group A.
After the opening draw between Morocco and Zambia (2-2) at the start of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the second Group A clash saw Senegal take on DR Congo this afternoon at El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia.
Senegal made a statement right from the outset. From the opening whistle, the Lionesses of Teranga set the tempo and piled relentless pressure on the Congolese defense. After just five minutes, captain Mama Diop broke the deadlock with a superb lob, set up by Méta Kandé.
Before the quarter-hour mark, Nguénar Ndiaye doubled the lead with a perfect assist from Adji Ndiaye (13’). Soon after, captain Mama Diop struck again to notch her brace (22’), stretching the score to 3-0. Despite their fighting spirit, the Leopards Ladies simply couldn't withstand Senegal’s power, leaving their defense exposed against a confident opponent.
In the dying minutes of the first half, the Lionesses hammered home their dominance and sealed a ruthless victory. Off a cross from Hapsatou Diallo, Nguénar Ndiaye emulated Mama Diop by adding a brace of her own. At halftime, the scoreboard already showed a resounding 4-0 in Senegal’s favor. The scoreline remained unchanged after the break. Senegal’s women take three valuable points from their opening game and seize the top spot in Group A.
